Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is an advanced two-step treatment for minimal to moderate actinic keratosis (AK). These are pre-malignant lesions treated generally on the face or scalp.

How does it work? A topical solution is applied to the AK’s (actinic keratosis). The solution is absorbed by AK cells where it is converted to a chemical that makes the cells sensitive to light. When the AK’s are exposed to a wavelength of light, they produce a form of oxygen that kills the cancer cells.

How is it treated? The treatment is a two step process. First Step: The solution is applied to the individual actinic keratosis on your face or scalp. You will be asked to wait the recommended time in order to allow the solution to penetrate the cells.
The Second Step: Usually an hour later, you will receive a blue light treatment which is the final step in the treatment. The BLU-U treatment time is 16 minutes and 40 seconds.

What are the benefits of PDT treatment? The recovery begins right after the treatment. It targets and destroys only the damaged AK cells and not the surrounding skin. There is minimal down time and no reports of scarring to date. It is less invasive than surgery and can be targeted very precisely.

What precautions should be taken? Patients should avoid exposure to sunlight or bright indoor light prior to and at least 48 hours after treatment. Special precautions must be taken to avoid exposure.
